07 — Shape through harvest
How to Prune Basil So It Becomes Bushier
A common beginner mistake is to pluck the largest leaves from the bottom of the plant one at a time. That gives an immediate handful of basil but does little to shape the plant for future production.
A better method is to cut a stem just above a pair of healthy leaves. Buds in the leaf axils then develop into new shoots, turning one growing point into two. University of Minnesota Extension notes that new growth should appear at the cut point after stem harvesting. Repeat this process across the plant and basil becomes broader, denser and more productive.
