Accoya® wood – history and benefits
Accoya® wood is specially modified timber that has become popular in the premium market. During its early development in the late 1990s and early 2000s, engineers focused on improving timber durability and dimensional stability while retaining its natural appearance and considering sustainability principles. This led to a patented, more environmentally considerate acetylation technology that alters the wood structure and delivers properties not achievable through conventional timber treatment.
Accoya® addresses three key needs: durable outdoor structures, dimensional stability, and natural beauty combined with sustainability.
Accoya® is made from Radiata Pine from responsibly managed forests. The timber undergoes a patented process that modifies it through to its core, helping it resist moisture, distortion and damage while preserving its natural wood fibres.
During acetylation, hydroxyl groups in the hemicelluloses are replaced by acetyl groups. This reduces water uptake and improves stability, producing wood that retains its shape and appearance for decades.
Key properties and benefits
Resistance and durability: Accoya® offers excellent resistance to moisture, decay, fungi and insects.
Its expected service life in outdoor structures is at least 50 years.
Dimensional stability: Structures retain their shape and function throughout the year, whatever the weather conditions.
Sustainability: Accoya® production uses timber from responsibly managed forests and a more environmentally considerate acetylation process.
Aesthetics: It preserves the natural grain and colour of wood, allowing wide boards without sacrificing visual quality.
Applications: Facade cladding, decking, pergolas, verandas and freestanding outdoor structures.
Minimal maintenance: Accoya® does not need regular painting, oiling or chemical treatment, supporting long-term durability with little upkeep.
