A Practical Guide to Aluminum Greenhouse Care
Regular upkeep helps an aluminum greenhouse remain a bright, dependable growing space for years and potentially decades. This guide covers routine cleaning, checks for moving parts, replacement of glazing clips and early attention to damaged panes.
Create a Cleaning Routine
A clean greenhouse admits more daylight and gives plants a healthier growing environment. Washing away dust, algae and moss from the glazing, frame and floor can also reduce places where pests and plant diseases may persist. In Canada, schedule the work around your local growing season and weather conditions.
Helpful tip: Move plants out temporarily before cleaning so that you can reach corners, benches and the floor safely.
Clear Away Dirt and Debris
Sweep benches, brush cobwebs from corners and remove loose material from the floor. On paving or concrete, a Cleansweep brush head with sturdy nylon bristles can be used dry or with a Spiral Flow hose. Check the gutters as well, particularly when they feed a rain barrel, so leaves and debris do not block the water flow.
Wash the Frame and Glazing
Clean the aluminum frame and glazing with hot soapy water or a greenhouse disinfectant. This simple job keeps the structure looking cared for while allowing more light to reach your plants. Give extra attention to overlaps between glass panes, where moss and algae can collect.
Clean Tools and Growing Surfaces
Wipe benches and shelves, then wash and disinfect empty seed trays, pots and other containers. Soak water mats or capillary mats to lift algae or moss. A layer of perforated polyethylene over the mats can make future clean-up easier.
Keep Up With Small Maintenance Jobs
Regular inspections and prompt repairs help preserve a dependable growing space and can extend the service life of your greenhouse.
Repair or Replace Damaged Glazing
Horticultural glass can develop cracks or break over time. For a small crack, all-weather repair tape is only a temporary measure; a broken pane should be replaced promptly to help prevent additional damage. Use the same type of glass or an appropriately fitted polycarbonate sheet.
Renew Missing Glazing Clips
Replace any glazing clip that is bent, damaged or missing so the pane remains properly secured. This matters especially through cold, windy or severe weather, when loose glazing is more vulnerable. New clips are a modest preventative expense compared with replacing a glass pane.
Inspect Greenhouse Doors
Most sliding greenhouse doors, including those on all Elite greenhouses, run on wheels. Test that they move freely, change worn wheels when needed and confirm that the tracks are firmly fixed in place.
Inspect Roof Vents
Make sure roof vents are correctly fitted and clear of obstructions. Where automatic openers are installed, test their operation and replace cylinders when necessary. Good ventilation supports air movement throughout the year and helps limit damp conditions that can encourage disease.
Plan Seasonal Checks
Schedule 2 thorough cleaning and inspection sessions each year: the first before your region’s busiest growing period and the second in fall, when the greenhouse is less crowded. The later check leaves time to prepare insulation before winter, but local weather should determine the exact timing.
With consistent care, your aluminum greenhouse can stay clean, efficient and ready to support healthy plants throughout the year. Contact us if you would like more advice about caring for your greenhouse.
