Powder-Coated Aluminum: Durability, Corrosion Protection and RAL Colours
Powder-coated aluminum provides a durable, corrosion-resistant finish across a range of RAL colours. Long-term appearance also depends on choosing the correct product, assembling it carefully, using suitable fasteners and following material-appropriate care.

Powder-coated aluminum brings low weight, dimensional stability, corrosion resistance and lasting colour to greenhouses, pergolas and other outdoor structures. Its finish is not armour: site exposure, pretreatment, assembly, connection hardware, cleaning and abrasion all shape its appearance over time.
This guide covers the essentials to consider before ordering, when receiving a delivery, during assembly and throughout ownership. Product-specific instructions always take priority. Explore more topics in Useful Information.
What is powder-coated aluminum?
Powder coating applies a dry finishing material to prepared aluminum parts, then cures it under controlled conditions. The result is a continuous layer bonded to the metal. Unlike liquid paint, the powder contains no liquid carrier before curing.
A durable finish depends on more than the visible coating. Aluminum alloy, cleaning and pretreatment, coating conditions and component design all matter. These details are difficult to assess once a structure is assembled, so confirm the stated colour and finish in the product documentation and order confirmation rather than relying on photographs.
The coating provides colour, supports routine cleaning and adds a barrier against moisture and contaminants. It cannot replace sound construction, proper drainage or correct installation.

Durability in everyday outdoor use
In a typical garden setting, a coated structure faces rain, UV exposure, changing temperatures, pollen, bird droppings, plant sap and occasional knocks. Powder-coated aluminum is well suited to these conditions when the surface and components are used as intended.
Normal weathering is not necessarily structural damage. Gloss and colour appearance can change gradually with exposure and time. Pale dust, mineral marks and pollen may be more noticeable on dark finishes, while darker deposits often stand out on light colours. Neither observation alone indicates that the frame is no longer functional.
Physical contact is often more damaging than ordinary weather. Leaning tools, rubbing branches, garden furniture, metal ladders or grit trapped under an installation tool can scratch a finish. Fixed decorations should not rub against profiles in the wind. Find regular-care guidance in Caring for Your Aluminum Greenhouse.
How aluminum resists corrosion
Aluminum behaves differently from unprotected steel. When exposed to oxygen, it forms a very thin natural oxide layer that helps slow further attack on the base metal. It therefore does not develop the reddish-brown rust associated with iron. Powder coating adds another separating protective layer.
Corrosion resistant does not mean unaffected by every environment. Standing moisture, salt, unsuitable cleaning chemicals and contact with incompatible metals can encourage localized attack. Narrow gaps that retain water and dirt are especially unfavourable. Keep drain holes and water paths clear of soil, leaves, sealant and installation materials.
Galvanic corrosion is another possible concern. It can occur where dissimilar metals are electrically connected while moisture acts as an electrolyte. Use only the specified or expressly approved screws, washers and connection components.
Conditions needing extra attention
- Coastal or salty locations: Rinse salt deposits away regularly with clean water and clean more often.
- Road salt and traffic areas: Do not leave splashed water from roads or paths on the frame for extended periods.
- Industrial or urban air: Deposits can retain moisture, so wash them away promptly.
- Pools and wellness areas: Do not assume chemicals, splashes or vapours are harmless. Check suitability for the actual environment.
- Fresh mortar, concrete or render: Do not allow alkaline building materials to dry on the surface. Protect components during nearby work.
- Permanent planting against profiles: Plan plant supports so plants, wires and fasteners neither obstruct drainage nor wear through the coating.

Understanding RAL colours
RAL references provide a standardized way to communicate colours. A RAL code is more precise than descriptions such as charcoal, dark green or black grey. It does not, however, define every visible property of a finished surface.
Sheen and texture shape the result alongside colour. A smooth, glossy surface reflects light differently from a matte or finely textured finish. Confirm both the RAL reference and the finish offered for the selected product.
Screens and printed material are guides only. Display brightness, colour rendering, browser settings, ambient light and image editing can all alter appearance. For projects where close coordination matters, a physical sample matching the planned finish is more useful. Confirm availability and whether a sample is binding before ordering.
Why the same colour can look different
A frame may appear cool and dark in the morning yet lighter or warmer in direct afternoon sun. Glass, polycarbonate, timber cladding, paving and planting also influence colour contrast. Learn more about traditional structures in our guides to Victorian Greenhouses and the Orangery Greenhouse Guide.
Small visual differences can also arise from geometry, viewing angle, production batches and surface texture. A narrow profile reflects light differently from a broad panel. Where an exact visual match with windows, doors or other elements is required, coordinate finishes before placing the order.
Choosing the product and finish before ordering
Choose a colour after confirming the structure, dimensions, site and intended use. With pergolas, wall connections, drainage and roof design generally have more planning impact than colour. Useful starting points include Bioclimatic or Classic Pergola, Wall-Mounted or Freestanding Pergola and the Pergola Size Guide.
For greenhouses, consider glazing, ventilation, interior climate and intended use together. The Greenhouses and Conservatories overview is a useful starting point. Our guides to Greenhouse Polycarbonate and Temperature and Humidity cover further important selection factors.
The product page is equally important for outdoor products made from several materials. Specifications for an Elma S Outdoor Sauna or a HC150 Barrel Sauna must not be transferred from another model. Compare sauna types in the Sauna category.
Finish-selection checklist before purchase
- Record the precise product name, variant and dimensions.
- Check the available RAL code and specified surface finish.
- Do not select colour solely from a phone or monitor image.
- Consider connections to walls, foundations, gutters and adjacent building elements.
- Mention site factors such as coastal exposure, road salt or heavy soiling.
- Confirm whether visible accessories and connections should have the same visual finish.
- Review colour, quantity and configuration on the order confirmation before approval.
- Clarify outstanding points through Contact and keep them in writing.

Receiving and checking coated components
Inspect the delivery before assembly begins whenever possible. Check packaging for impact marks, punctures and moisture. Compare parcels and identifiable parts with the delivery documents. Open packaging with tools that cannot accidentally cut into profiles.
Distinguish loose packaging residue or dirt from actual damage. First clean a dirty area gently with water and a soft cloth. Do not rub aggressively to test whether a mark disappears. Photograph scratches, dents, chips or missing parts from several angles before fitting them, then report them through the applicable process. See Warranty for information about claims and conditions.
Store parts dry, stable and protected from site traffic until assembly. Unless product instructions state otherwise, do not leave protective films on surfaces unnecessarily long in sun and moisture.
Protecting the finish during installation
Many preventable surface marks occur while unpacking and assembling. Do not place profiles directly on paving, gravel or concrete. Clean, soft supports stop grit beneath a component from acting like abrasive paper. Keep screws and tools in containers, not on coated profiles.
The structure must be aligned and anchored on its intended base. Forced assembly can stress profiles and damage joints. Include the Pergola Foundation Guide at the planning stage. Canada’s National Model Codes do not determine the rules for every site. Check the adopted provincial or territorial requirements and ask the relevant local authority how zoning, the structure’s dimensions, its site and proposed use affect permits or consent. The guide to Permits for a Greenhouse or Pergola is a useful planning resource, but the rules applicable to the project location remain controlling.
- Use only the intended holes, screws, seals and hardware.
- Remove shavings completely and promptly after drilling or adjustment work.
- Do not grip profiles with unprotected clamps or metal tools.
- Remove protective films as directed in the assembly manual.
- Keep drainage channels and openings clear.
- Do not cut or drill components unless the product instructions expressly permit it.

Cleaning and regular care
Frequent gentle cleaning is more effective than occasional heavy scrubbing. Rinse loose dirt with clean water first. Then use a soft cloth or sponge with a mild cleaner suitable for the coating, followed by a thorough clean-water rinse.
Avoid scouring powders, steel wool, hard brushes, blades and aggressive solvents. Do not use strongly acidic or alkaline products, or unfamiliar construction cleaners, without confirmed material compatibility. Do not let cleaner dry on a hot surface. Test a new product in an inconspicuous place first and follow product-specific care instructions.
The right frequency depends on the location. A freestanding structure in a clean rural setting may need less cleaning than one beneath trees, beside a busy road or in salty air. Rather than following a fixed calendar, remove aggressive or moisture-retaining deposits before they remain in place.
Practical care routine
| When | Check or action |
|---|---|
| After installation | Remove shavings, adhesive residue, packaging and construction dirt; check drainage. |
| When visibly dirty | Clean with water and soft materials; remove bird droppings and plant sap promptly. |
| After winter or heavy pollen | Inspect and clean frames, connections, gutters and drainage routes. |
| After storms or construction work | Check for rubbing, loose debris, mortar splashes and mechanical damage. |
| For small areas of damage | Photograph the area, remove the cause and ask about the appropriate repair method before proceeding. |
Scratches, chips and cosmetic repairs
First assess a surface scratch: is it dirt, coating damage or damage to the profile itself? A dent, distortion or damaged joint must not be treated as merely cosmetic. When in doubt, do not load or alter the component without technical advice.
A suitable touch-up product may make a small damaged area less conspicuous while shielding it from direct exposure. Work completed on site will not recreate the original factory powder-coating process, so colour, sheen and texture may differ. Do not select automotive or hardware-store paint simply because its colour name sounds similar.
Before any touch-up, the area must be clean, dry and free of loose material. Match the method and materials to the product or care guidance. Extensive sanding can unnecessarily damage sound layers.

Greenhouse and pergola considerations
Inside a greenhouse, condensation, high humidity, fertilizer, plant-protection products, cleaners and organic residue can occur in a confined space. Do not leave splashes on profiles. Keep gutters and drainage channels free from soil and plant debris. For growing guidance, see Growing Lettuce in a Greenhouse. Growing advice does not replace frame-care instructions.
For pergolas, drainage, wall connections and foundations are key. A coating cannot correct poorly planned water management. Do not paint over, obstruct or use unsuitable lubricants on movable louvres or other mechanical components. The article Is a Bioclimatic Pergola Worth It? helps with the broader system choice.
Dark and light finishes can warm differently in sun, but there is no universally best colour. For plants, glazing, shading, ventilation, humidity control and location are usually more important than the colour of narrow frame profiles. Under a pergola, roof type, orientation and air movement matter alongside appearance.
Frequently asked questions
Does powder-coated aluminum rust?
Aluminum does not form reddish-brown iron rust. It can still corrode in unfavourable conditions, especially with salt exposure, standing moisture, unsuitable chemicals or incompatible metal contact. Powder coating improves protection but does not remove the need for sound construction and care.
Will the coating need repainting eventually?
Not on a fixed schedule. Condition, location and mechanical exposure are what matter. Clean an intact coating rather than painting it preventively. If wear or damage is widespread, first ask whether professional refinishing is technically appropriate.
Is a RAL code an exact digital colour?
No. A RAL code is a standardized colour reference, not a universal screen value. Display calibration, brightness, photography and ambient light alter what you see. The colour code alone also does not determine sheen or texture.
Can components with the same RAL reference look slightly different?
Yes. Geometry, light, texture, sheen, substrate and production batches can create visible variation. A slight difference in appearance does not automatically mean the wrong RAL code was used. Physical samples are sensible where close coordination is important.
Can I clean the frame with a pressure washer?
Water, a soft sponge and a suitable mild cleaner are the gentler choice. High-pressure water can stress seals, joints, damaged areas and sensitive connections, or drive dirt into gaps. Use it only where product instructions expressly permit it.
What should I do if a delivered component is scratched?
Do not install or repair it immediately. Photograph the packaging, component, damaged area and identification markings clearly. Compare the delivery with its documents and report the issue through the stated process. Keep packaging until the matter is resolved.
Is powder-coated aluminum maintenance-free?
No. It is low maintenance, not maintenance-free. Remove dirt, salt, leaves and aggressive residue, and inspect drainage routes, joints and areas subject to mechanical contact regularly. Required care depends on location and use.
Can I use any stainless-steel screw or hardware-store fastener?
Not without checking. Dimensions, strength, head shape, sealing, coating and metal compatibility must suit the structure. A metal regarded as high quality is not automatically appropriate for every connection. Use specified or expressly approved fasteners.
Does a scratch automatically mean the frame will fail?
No. A small surface scratch is usually a localized finish issue. A deep score, deformation, cracked joint or damage at a load-bearing connection requires technical assessment. Position and depth matter more than visibility alone.
Which colour is best for warmth or plant growth?
There is no universally best frame colour. Dark surfaces generally absorb more solar energy, but greenhouse climate is shaped much more by glazing, ventilation, shading, size and location. Do not use colour as a substitute for functional climate planning.
Where can I find my product’s confirmed colour and care requirements?
Refer to the product description, quotation, order confirmation, assembly manual and supplied care documents. General photographs or details from a similar model are not enough. If information conflicts, obtain written clarification before ordering or treating the finish.
